Our aim is to save a bit of Lancashire’s heritage for the benefit of future generations. The Downham Banner was made in 1885 to commemorate the Centenary of the Downham Benevolent Society. It is a large Banner designed to be used at the head of the Parades held by the Society. The Banner is made of silk and over the years it has deteriorated and because it is so large, it has been kept rolled-up rather than being hung and this has also contributed to the state that the Banner is in today.

A Steering Group has been formed to save the Banner. Our plan is to:

  • Agree a programme of Conservation of The Banner to be undertaken by The People’s History Museum, Manchester
  • Seek a Grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to cover the costs of conservation and display of the Banner and associated educational materials
  • Present the Banner to the Museum of Lancashire, Preston, for permanent display
  • Have a full scale facsimile of the Banner made for display at the Museum of Lancashire during times when the original is being rested to aid its preservation
  • Have a small number of Mini Banners made for display in and use by our four hubs: Church, Library, School, and Village Hall.
  • Provide and develop the content for, an inter-active digital display panel at the Museum of Lancashire to assist visitor understanding of the Banner
  • Support further historic research into the Banner and the Benevolent and Friendly Societies movement in Lancashire
  • Sponsor an annual sermon based on the Benevolent Society’s history and the story of The Good Samaritan, pictured on the Banner, and its text “Go thou and do likewise”
